Hi Phoebe and Daphne – I am a big fan of the AKOM podcast, but also mostly because I’m a big fan of you guys. I just love your wise insight, passion, and sense of humor. It always feels like hanging out with really cool friends, probably high, and sharing an obsession with the ever fascinating Beatles story. So, thanks. I wasn’t sure if there was an official channel to submit a question for consideration, so I’m just gonna do it here:
I just returned from a week long silent meditation retreat, and had a lot of time to reflect, and naturally found myself thinking a bit about the Beatles in Rishikesh. First of all, it struck me that, contrary to the experience of silence and deprivation I was experiencing, they obviously had their guitars and plenty of time to play and compose and mess about! But also, something occurred to me that I’d never thought about, and wondered if you scholars had any insight into. Namely that just before they left for India, Brian Epstein had died tragically and unexpectedly. That they used the retreat as a refuge and a place to regroup and deal with this staggering loss. And yet… while they wrote a ton of songs, about Prudence, and Julia, and Bungalow Bill, and Desmond and Molly Jones – why not a single reference to this pivotal and central figure in their lives??? It seemed kind of shocking actually when I thought about it. In fact, as far as I know, I don’t think the loss of Brian, or even Brian himself, was ever addressed in their work, was it? With the possible exception of “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”, which I am absolutely convinced is about Brian. But that aspect of the Brian/John story aside, do you think that Brian, or his sad demise ever found its way into the Beatles canon? And if not, why?
Would really love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks!
